APRIL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: CATALINA RODRIGUEZ

By Scarlet Rodriguez

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, interests/hobbies, etc).

Hey guys! I was born in Bogota, Colombia and moved to the states when I was 6 years old. Grew up in Miami, went to school at Texas A&M, and currently live here in Houston. I am a supply chain consultant and have really enjoyed being able to travel around the country to places I would’ve never guessed existed! You could say my favorite hobby is traveling… I love going to new cities/countries and exploring different cultures. I absolutely love going to the beach, so I make sure my travels almost always include at least one beach day. Given Houston’s rich restaurant scene, I have also developed a great liking for trying new restaurants in the city. I enjoy being outside and participating in any outside activity from swimming to hiking (when the weather is nice), but also love to relax at home while eating something yummy and binge-watching Netflix.

When did you start working out District H?

Exactly one year ago! It was one of the last days in March 2021.

What made you decide to start working out in general?

I’ve always worked out ever since I can remember. I used to dance in school and before District H, I would do different types of HIIT classes. Once I felt like I had hit a plateau, I decided to give strength training a try and immediately fell in love with it!

How have your workouts made an impact on your life outside of the gym?

Let’s just say I can now basically carry all my groceries in one trip – and I love it! Other than that, I have more energy than I used to, and it has made me feel so much more confident about myself.

What is your favorite & least favorite workout or movement?

Favorite: Kettle bell swings and running short distances

Least favorite: Bar-over burpees and the BIKE

What is your favorite & least favorite lift?

Favorite: Back/Front squats

Least favorite: Overhead squats

What are your fitness goals?

Continuing to gain muscle while losing body fat. I love to not only see that I am gaining muscle in my in-body scan, but also FEEL stronger than the day before.

What is your proudest gym moment/achievement?

Overall, coming closer and closer to RX-ing workouts until finally being able to RX some of them.

There is a lot of room for improvement, but I am proud of any gym achievement – No matter how small.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Live the present and celebrate small wins”

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I took acting classes as a kid and was in a commercial in Colombia. Sadly, didn’t make it to Hollywood though

What advice would you give to newbies?

Take your time to learn the foundations. Form is everything! You owe your body that time to learn so you can prevent injuries or pain in the long run. Also… HAVE FUN!
