Getting Off the Hamster Wheel

by Coach Tommy

Happy Friday!

This week we’ve focused on the benefits of personalizing your workout routine.

Contrary to where the industry has shifted over the last 5 years, I’ve stated my position as individuals needing more personalization around their fitness to help them truly achieve their health and wellness goals.

Everything else, in my humble opinion, is merely a distraction.

The same arguments that have been made about why Peloton, Tonal, or Mirror are the “next best thing” remind me of when BowFlex came out in the late 90’s early 2000s….just a little fancier.

Repackaging high-intensity interval training, adding some heart rate monitors, red lights, and a DJ is all about making an “experience” out of your fitness but not help you truly achieve long-term results.

Here is the truth!

Americans need to move more. That is without a doubt.

Making it “fun” is essential. How many of us dread the days of hours of running on the treadmill? There isn’t enough caffeine or playlists that will be able to overcome the mundane of that machine.

But solely relying on “fun” and distractions is not genuinely serving the people walking into that facility. At least not in the long run.

They are great options to get started, though! If they are being presented to you, they can be a great way to make exercise fun and get you into a routine.

Hey, any movement on any given day is better than none.

But what I urge you to think about is taking your thought process just a little further down the rabbit hole and invest your money into a routine that will serve you throughout your life. What does that look like?

  • Creating a fitness plan that addresses your specific needs
  • Building lifestyle habits that will allow you to see progress and help you achieve autonomy in your life
  • Having an honest discussion about your nutrition and mental health
  • Addressing stress management as it is one of the single most detrimental factors to your long-term health
  • Sleep hygiene

Your priorities will change over time, but these elements will always be a part of your life.

If you are tired of going through the cycles of “dieting” and “getting into shape” just to fall out of shape and hit repeat every year, then we need to rethink our approach to health.

Having a solution that is flexible, personal, and 100% committed to you as an individual better serves you in the long run.

Fitness fads will always be with us. There will always be a new routine, a new diet, or the next best technology that attempts to address everyone’s desire to just look and feel good. It is packaged and repackaged every few years, but it’s a playbook that continues to work.

Let’s start thinking differently and get off the hamster wheel.
