Meet Our May Athlete of the Month: Monique Sigala

By Scarlet Rodriguez

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, interests/hobbies.

I am a Mom to one fantastic 8 yo daughter. She and I love living in The Heights and taking advantage of everything it has to offer.

When did you start working out District H?

Feb. 2022

What made you decide to start working out in general?

In Aug. of 2020 I had hit an unhealthy weight for my size and height, it was a real wake up call to change my life. I lost 30 lbs, and have kept it off by staying consistent in continuing to workout at least 3x a week.  I have also had a clean bill of health since that time and that’s really the real win.

How have your workouts made an impact on your life outside of the gym?

Working out has changed my entire life. I feel healthier all round. I’m a better Mom because I take time for myself. My relationship with food is healthier, my body as a whole functions better because I make a point to move everyday. I feel more confident, my daughter also thinks I’m the strongest person she knows and that’s really my motivation to keep coming.

What is your favorite & least favorite workout or movement?

I hate, hate hate pushups in all forms , lol… but I can at least do some now.  My favorite is everything else but a push up.

What is your favorite & least favorite lift?

I like them all because they all still challenge me.

What are your fitness goals?

I just want to be able to take care of myself for as long as I am here.

What is your proudest gym moment/achievement?

Learning to lift in general, getting my Mile times down, getting my toes to bar, and every time I add a little more weight.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

“You’re doing great sweetie”- Kris Kardashian

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I was an Emo Kid, used to go to all the Emo shows in HS.  Super straight hair and all!

What advice would you give to newbies?

Just keep coming. Make your reservations in advance and hold yourself accountable in the way you’d hold your self accountable for meetings and doctor appointments.
