Jim Rohn, the famous businessman and self-improvement guru, famously said, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, and that means everyone in your life counts.”
As a tribal species, we naturally cluster together into groups of like-minded individuals and form communities.
Who we surround ourselves with heavily influences what we perceive, our preferences, and our mood. French sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu, refers to this phenomenon as social distinction.
This week we have been talking about the power of intrinsic motivation, which allows us to develop long-term habits around whatever it is that we prioritize in our lives.
The last component of developing intrinsic motivation is relatedness.
To do something that doesn’t require a lot of self-control, you need to feel some socio-cultural connection to it.
In other words, you need to find a tribe of like-minded individuals who also want to prioritize health in their life.
CrossFit has understood this concept better than most. How many co-workers do you have that are over the top annoying about their love for CrossFit?
Trust me, I used to be one of them.
It may seem obnoxious to you because these people in your life have developed such a strong emotional attachment to a fitness routine that is fostered by relatedness with a tribe of like-minded individuals.
Now I am not saying that you need to become over the top obnoxious about your health. I am saying that you can find a similar emotional attachment to something by surrounding yourself with a community of people trying to get to the same place you are in terms of your fitness.
At District H, we are very mindful of this phenomenon and take extraordinary measures to foster a culture of positivity, perpetual self-improvement, and individualized attention. We welcome all walks of life to come into our facility and improve themselves. Once a quarter, we host a social event that allows those District H roots to set themselves even deeper in our member’s lives.
Why? Because this place matters to people.
So if you are ready to prioritize your health, sit down and think about whom you would like to surround yourself with so this becomes a priority for you. This team of individuals will make your commitment to your goals a lot easier, more enjoyable, and more sustainable over the long term.
