by Tommy Allen If you ever want to see two things that don’t belong together: it would be me….and a yoga class. Never in my life have I ever felt more uncomfortable or out of place, mainly due to my inflexibility and lack of core endurance. When I was in college, the yoga instructor specifically pointed me out in front of the class about how “not to do it.” But there is one thing I truly admire about the yogis: the power of the breath. I want to preface this entire blog post by saying that all of this comes from the guy who is the least yogi, hippie, “one with earth” type of person you can think of. But there is a lot of scientific evidence supporting the power of the breath. My goal is to provide general health & performance examples and protocols to help you in your...

by Tommy Allen If there is one thing I have learned over the last 10+ years in the fitness industry, it is that personalization of the client experience leads to better long-term results for their own health & wellness. One of the reasons we have drifted away from the CrossFit culture and brand is that it didn’t necessarily lend itself well to personalization. For every soul that entered District H, we only had one solution to offer them: constantly varied, functional movements, at a high intensity, in a group class setting. For 7+ years, in multiple gyms, I have seen individuals come and go and their primary reason for leaving outside of life events, like moving or losing a job, is that they weren’t achieving their health & wellness goals. This was usually wrapped up in statements like, “it just isn’t working for me” or “I don’t have time to...

By Tommy Allen I could probably write an entire book on the topic of communication and how crucial it has been in all areas of my life, but today I want to speak directly to you, my community, and the future of District H and the decisions that are being made. This has been on my mind for a long time and started even before I took over the gym. While most of you may associate a gym as a business of fitness, we are really in the business of relationships. Now that may sound a little weird, but think about it. Most of us enjoy coming to the gym because of the people we get to interact with. It is really the same for us as coaches and owners. Our job is to help you reach your goals, but we are primarily trying to understand you as a person...

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, interests/hobbies, etc). I was born in Roswell, New Mexico so my mom always calls me her little alien. Have lived in Houston most of my life. I had no idea what I wanted to do when I started college, so I majored in philosophy, bartended for a bit, and then went to law school where I met my favorite person, Joe. We’ve been married for four years and have two cat kids. I really enjoyed tax classes during law school and now work in tax consulting. I’m an only child, but have six step siblings. My family is pretty odd, but highly entertaining.  When did you start coming to District H? January of 2021 What made you decide to start coming to District H? Mainly I wanted to get stronger, but also it just looked fun and challenging! How has District H made...

by Coach Miranda Johnson Most days when I walk our dog Nova, I am plugged into some sort of podcast. I like to use our morning time together to try to learn something and get my knowledge juices flowing. My inspiration for this blog actually came to me earlier this week when I was listening to an episode. In it, the hosts were discussing what life would be like if they were to ever become “real celebrities”. There was a moment during the episode in which the main host was acknowledging how crazy it would be to have actual real fame and how much that would change his lifestyle. Personally, I don’t envy anyone who is even slightest bit famous. I mean, really take a second to try to wrap your head around the thought of not even being able to go into H-E-B, or walk to a park with...
