Meet Athlete of the Month – Brian Watson

Name:  Brian Watson

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, interests/hobbies, etc).

I grew up in Corpus Christi, TX, and have lived in Houston the past 18 years.  I spent 10 years in San Diego, CA before moving here.  I am blessed to have 3 awesome kiddos – Tessa (18), Ava (16), and Gage (11).  They keep me trying to be young and always look for the positive of any issue.   I have spent my entire professional career in Mutli-family Development and Construction (Apartments), and currently lead the Construction team for Alliance Realty Partners.  We recently built the Heights Waterworks and 15th Street Flats located here in the Heights.   I enjoy hunting and fishing, which has taken me to many places around the world.  That passion has led me to retriever training and competing in Field trials with my Labs.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

Jan 2021

What made you decide to start CrossFit?

It was something new and pushed my boundaries on how to improve my body and its movements.

How has CrossFit made an impact on your life outside of the gym?

Great way to manage stress, and allow me to keep up with my outdoor pursuits.

What is your favorite & least favorite WOD or movement?

I don’t know how you can have a favorite WOD, they all are meant to kick your ass.  However, any WOD with the bike incorporated into it is preferred.   I do like how each WOD is a challenge and you are competing against yourself to show improvement.

What is your favorite & least favorite lift?

Fav – back squat

Least – snatch

What are your CrossFit goals?

Pretty simple – to show up each day and improve from yesterday.  Specific goal would be to do a Muscle up and Double Unders

What is your proudest CrossFit moment/achievement?

Every time I get a PR feels awesome!

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

There is a lot to choose from here, but I would say that Henry Ford’s quote of “If you think you can do a thing or can not do a thing, you are right”.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I have had brain surgery.  Got the scar to show for it! 😉

What advice would you give to newbies?

Pick a class time, show up and don’t worry about the goofy Crossfit acronyms for workouts.  Trust that the coaches will get you through it and you will enjoy it.
