By Miranda DeMark Last week I had the privilege of going back home to Wisconsin to visit my parents. While I was there, I got a great break from the humidity, but also a sad reminder of what is still happening out there in the health/fitness world. During my stay, my mom took me to a shop because she wanted to me experience these awesome protein shakes she could not stop raving about. Come to find out that once we actually went to this place after our workout, it was another one of those pyramid marketing supplement brands.  This place was not at all what I was expecting. The shop was blaring EDM house music and had literally 50 different flavors to choose from for their shakes. It was overwhelming. They also had $5 “fat burners” that could be added on to your already expensive “smoothie” as well a free...

Written by Coach Tommy I know…sounds like a very simple and mundane question, but I challenge you to spend 60 seconds answering this question for yourself. The beautiful thing about this question is that there is no “right” answer. Fitness can serve as a means to enjoy life like great cuisine, especially living in an amazing “foodie” city like Houston. It could mean performance. As a person who is constantly striving to push themselves, fitness constantly challenges you to realize your full physical potential. It could mean function. Whether that is in your activities of daily living or being able to perform at work. It could be general wellness. You understand that taking care of your health needs to be a priority. It allows you to live the life you want, accomplish the goals you have set for yourself, or impact the lives that mean the most to you. The...

We are in the thick of competition season. With the Tokyo Olympics taking place and The 2021 CrossFit Games just wrapping up, it’s been extremely inspiring to watch. Looking at all of these incredible athletes competing, makes me get the itch to get out there again soon, too. There’s this state of flow that occurs when you’re in a competitive environment. The crowd, the loud music, the energy, it all causes time to stop for a split second. I’ve always considered myself a competitive person. In fact, I still get slightly annoyed if I just-so-happen to lose in a board game. But in all seriousness, competitive sport for me has always been something I’ve truly enjoyed and I think has also led to a lot of self-growth. I know a lot of times when competition is brought up at the gym or its that time of the year for The...

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, interests/hobbies, etc).Well I have been in the restaurant business since I was a kid. My family owned a local Mexican/Seafood Restaurant off Irvington for 35 years where I started as a buss boy, dishwasher, line cook, server, FOH Manager/Bartender and at the age of 23 was managing the whole place. In my late 20’s I started my career with HEB and after several years working in the Cooking Connection as a Manager, became the Media Chef for them for the next 5 years doing cooking demos on live tv. In March 2012, I launched D-Leecious Bites, which is my catering business and never looked back. After COVID, with the business taking a huge hit, I got an opportunity to work for Luna Recovery Services, where I’m at currently. This company is a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facility where they purchased a...
